How many times have you wished you could watch a well-crafted, meaningful movie that doesn’t necessarily take up much of your time? Short films, while primarily acting as works for filmmakers to showcase their creativity and talent, are becoming increasingly popular among audiences. While they’re light in length, they can come with themes or undertones that leave long-lasting effects.
Sometimes, short films just succeed at exchanging duration for quality.
While there’s numerous platforms on which you can watch quality short films, if you’re looking for a reliable stream that will make you respond emotionally; whether it be laugh, cry or pee your pants (depending on your mood), YouTube is the ultimate source of channels specializing in it.
Free and constant, the films are there to cater to your demand for entertainment, whether you’ve got time to spare or not.
#1 Omeleto
Posting short films of every genre, Omeleto is a channel that locates and curates some of the best works in terms of production and reception, targeting (though not always) short films that have received at least one award.
I’ve spent a considerable amount of time watching the short films on there, and I must warn you: Once you begin watching just one of them, there’s no going back. The channel owner regularly posts an analysis of the film in each film’s description box which invites for a thorough grasp of plot, theme and cinematography.
Omeleto releases a new short film every other day.
Similar to Omeleto, this channel shows off a selection of short films unbound to a particular genre. It’s also distinguished for posting experimental films by directors who may not be so well known, thus garnering attention and support for undiscovered talent.
They post a new short film regularly, though not as often as Omeleto.
#3 DUST
I may be a bit biased as a science-fiction lover, but this has got to be one of the best platforms for watching hand-picked, quality short films. Regardless of genre preferences, if you’re a fan of thought-provoking scenes and characters, the short movies curated by DUST are a must-watch.
They release a new film every week. Occasionally, they’ll even post sci-fi music video clips that explore a particular theme or issue through music.
Aiming to look at society through the lenses of science and technology, all of their short films deal with concurrent events, forthcoming consequences, and predictions as to the state of humanity in the not-so-distant future.
These were some of my recommendations for channels to peek at on days when you’re looking for a quick but meaningful indulgence into cinema, which is, more times than not, a symbol of more than mere entertainment. Short films are one of its branches that have managed to encapsulate the essence of traveling through space and time in a matter of minutes.
